The Real Cost of a Furukawa Network Cable Box

The surface problem: the price is too good
In Q2 2024, a vendor quoted us $86 per box for Furukawa Cat6 U/UTP. Our regular distributor was at $124. The difference: $760 on a 20-box order. That's real money. My first instinct was to celebrate.
Then I did what I should have done with the first quote: I asked to see a physical sample. The vendor sent a photo of a sealed box. That's not the same thing.
Most buyers focus on per-unit pricing and completely miss what's inside the box. The question everyone asks is, 'What's your best price?' The question they should ask is, 'What's in the box, and how do I verify it?'
The deep cause: a cable spec is not a cable
Here's the part that took me six years to learn. A Furukawa box can contain several different cables. The brand name is printed on the jacket. The label says Cat6. The box says 305m. None of that tells you whether the conductor is solid bare copper or copper-clad aluminum, also known as CCA.
Why does that matter? Because CCA is cheaper to make. It also has higher DC resistance, runs hotter, and fails TIA-568.2-D tests. It looks like copper when you strip it. The only way to know for sure is to scrape it with a knife: copper is copper-colored all the way through; CCA reveals silver aluminum underneath.
Cable is cable. It isn't.
There's also the length question. Some boxes are labeled 305m but measure shorter. I've seen boxes with 295m due to 'manufacturing tolerance.' On a large project, that five meters disappears when you're pulling the last run, and someone has to open another box for one room.
And 'white' is not a specification. I say that because at least once a month someone in our office says 'just order white Cat6.' White is a jacket color. The cable still has to be Cat5e, Cat6, or Cat6a; U/UTP or F/UTP; CM or CMR rated. If you're running cable through a plenum, the fire rating matters more than the color.
The cost of getting it wrong
In 2023, I compared two suppliers. The low-priced supplier quoted $86 per box for 'Furukawa-compatible' Cat6. Our regular distributor quoted $124 per box for genuine Furukawa with a batch certificate. I almost went with the cheap option. Then I calculated the total cost of ownership, and it was not close.
We bought 10 boxes as a pilot. Eight of 22 links failed certification. The cable was CCA, and the invoice didn't mention it. We paid $1,400 for electricians to re-pull the runs, $600 for a certified tester, and lost a week of schedule. The original 'savings' was $380. The rework was $2,000. Net result: negative $1,620.
The quoted price is the beginning of the negotiation, not the end of the cost.
That's the thing about cheap cable. The cost doesn't show up on the purchase order. It shows up later, as failed tests, rework, and a customer who tells everyone that your company does sloppy work.
After tracking 14 cable orders in our procurement system, I found that most of our budget overruns didn't come from the expensive cable. They came from the cheap cable that had to be replaced. We now have a policy: no cable purchase without a datasheet, a physical sample, and a written length guarantee.
The honest limitation: when Furukawa cable is not the answer
I'm not saying every project needs a genuine Furukawa cable box. If you're wiring a temporary booth for a trade show, and the run is 10 meters, you don't need a 305m certified box. A generic pre-made patch cable is fine. If you're on a tight budget and the client accepts uncertified cabling, you can make that choice. Just don't pretend it's the same thing.
I recommend Furukawa for permanent structured cabling where certification, warranty, and long-term reliability matter. If you're packaging a solution for a hospital or a data center, the worst thing you can do is save $38 a box and then watch a link fail during final testing.
What to do before you order
If you're buying a Furukawa cable box, here's the checklist I use:
- Buy from an authorized distributor, not from a marketplace listing with 'Furukawa' in the title.
- Ask for a physical sample and scrape the conductor. If it's not solid copper, stop.
- Request the datasheet and batch certificate before the PO.
- Confirm the exact length per box in writing—305m, not 'approximately.'
- Specify category, shielding, and fire rating. 'White' is not enough.
- Compare total cost: cable, shipping, taxes, testing, and the cost of rework if the cable fails.
- Ask for warranty terms in writing. A vendor who won't put it on paper is a warning.
Bottom line: The cheapest Furukawa cable box is usually the most expensive one you'll ever buy. The price is visible. The cost is hidden. You just have to know where to look.
