Searching “Furukawa” can pull up an industrial equipment company, several people with the same surname, and plenty of pages that have nothing to do with rock breaking. If you are here because a hydraulic breaker or an excavator attachment is on your purchase list, this FAQ is for you.
I’m a quality reviewer for a heavy-equipment attachment supplier. I inspect about 200 orders each year before they go out to customers. Some of the checks below are basic spec matching. Others come from deliveries that arrived with model numbers that did not match the paperwork, or brackets that did not match the machine.
My experience is mostly with mid-size breakers for 12-to-45 tonne excavators. If you are speccing a compact machine or a 70-tonne carrier, your numbers will be different. I’m not pretending this guide covers every frame size.

Two suppliers can quote the same Furukawa model at different prices. One is selling the breaker body only. The other quote includes the mounting bracket, hoses, fittings, and a working tool. The second one is more expensive on paper, but it is a lot closer to a ready-to-run attachment.
This is where first-time buyers usually hit a surprise. The headline price looks close to the budget. Then the bracket is extra. Hoses are extra. The chisel is extra. The machine sits in the yard waiting for parts that were never in the order.
Start by asking one question: “Does this price include everything needed to mount the breaker to my excavator and start working?” If the answer is “not exactly,” ask for the full list.
2. Does the model match the excavator’s flow, pressure, and mounting dimensions?
A Furukawa breaker is not just sized by carrier weight. You need hydraulic oil flow, operating pressure, and the carrier’s mounting pin distance to match a specific breaker model. Too much flow can make the breaker run faster than intended, overheat the oil, and shorten seal life. Too little flow makes it weak and slow.
Pressure is also part of the formula. If the machine’s relief pressure is higher than the breaker’s rating, internal components can take damage that does not show up right away.
Furukawa publishes those numbers in its technical literature. Ask the dealer for the model-specific data sheet, not a one-line “fits 20-ton excavator” claim. That label means less than the hydraulics.
3. Are you buying genuine Furukawa or something “Furukawa-compatible”?
Not every breaker on a comparison table is made by Furukawa. Some are aftermarket units built as replacements. Some are compatible pistons, seals, and tools for a Furukawa body. That does not automatically make them bad. It makes them different products.
“Compatible” is not a spec. Ask what is original, what is not, and what the seller has actually verified. If a quote says “fits Furukawa,” that tells you nothing about the manufacturer of the internal parts. On a breaker, the internal parts do the work.
If you are buying replacement parts, matching the brand name is less important than matching the exact model suffix and dimension. If you are buying a complete breaker, the brand label is part of the decision. It is not the entire spec.
4. What is the manufacture date, not just the ship date?
Many buyers ask, “Is this new?” and then stop. A more useful question is “When was it manufactured?”
A breaker can sit in a warehouse for two or three years after production. Rubber seals can dry out. Grease settles. Nitrogen pre-charge in the accumulator can leak down. The breaker may be technically new but no longer in the condition it left the factory in.
Honestly, my best guess is that many buyers stop at “new” because a manufacture date is less visible than a ship date. I would not reject older stock automatically. But I would ask the supplier to verify the gas pre-charge and inspect the seals before installation. Ideally, that is included in the purchase agreement.
5. What inspection paperwork comes with the unit?
When I check a breaker before it goes to a customer, I compare the serial number stamped on the body with the packing list and the model number on the purchase order. The big label on the box is not proof. The stamp and the paperwork have to agree.
A simple acceptance package should include:
- The full model number and serial number.
- The measured nitrogen pre-charge pressure, if available.
- A leak check or test report from the supplier.
- The working tool part number and tip style.
That list might sound basic, but it catches a lot of problems. In Q1 2024, we found two units out of eight that matched the box label but not the stamped serial number on the breaker body. The units looked identical. Good paperwork stopped a bad release.
6. What happens if something fails after the first month?
A hydraulic breaker works in a harsh environment. Hoses get knocked. Seals wear. Tools break. You want to know who pays for what before that happens, not during an emergency.
Ask for the warranty terms in writing. Wear items such as chisels and moil points are rarely covered by an extended warranty. That is normal. But internal seal and hydraulic failures may be covered, and the freight arrangement matters.
Freight for a heavy breaker is not a small amount. If you are responsible for shipping the unit both ways and the dealer handles diagnosis only after it arrives, a “warranty” claim is still expensive. From my perspective, support terms are part of the product.
7. Is the cheapest Furukawa breaker quote ever the right choice?
The way I see it, the correct answer is “sometimes, if you compare the full scope.” The problem is that many buyers compare only the breaker body and then discover the rest later.
Price still matters. I get why purchasing teams look at the lowest number; budgets are real. But a lower quote can disappear into the cost of freight, adaptors, missed production, or a replacement after a misapplied breaker damages itself.
The alternative is not to overpay. It is to define the job carefully and compare total cost: breaker, bracket, hoses, tool, hydraulic adjustment, freight, warranty coverage, and the data that proves the unit meets spec.
That is what makes a good Furukawa purchase. It is not the price label. It is the completeness of the quote and the confidence you can mount it today.
